Welcome!

Hello everyone!

Welcome to the course website for HESO 449B 003: International Health and Development. This is a new, exciting 3-credit course unlike any previously offered at UBC – a course that will take a practical, hands-on approach to health-based international development projects with the goal of teaching students what it takes to create successful projects. See Course Description for more details on the course.

This course is a Student Directed Seminar. What is a Student Directed Seminar (‘SDS’) you may ask? An SDS course is one that is designed and developed by undergraduate students under the guidance of a faculty member. What makes an SDS course a unique and challenging opportunity for students?

  • The course is in the format of a seminar, so it is discussion based. There are no boring lectures to sit through – the class is driven by the participation and passion of the students
  • The course was designed by students with the goal of creating a dynamic and fun environment. Flexibility has been left in the syllabus for the students of the class to decide what they want to dive deeper into and what they want to skip
  • Only students extremely interested in the subject take the course creating an atmosphere of like-minded students desiring to learn from and thrive off each other

Due to limited spacing, we are accepting applications for the 14 available seats in the class. Applications can be found at the Application page. They are due by December 20th.

We welcome you to explore the site and email us (the course coordinators) with any questions you may have about the course.

Thanks for stopping by!
